Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos’ links to Inter Milan have surprised journalist Joshua Barrie.
The Lowdown: Morelos’ future
Morelos’ future at Ibrox is up in the air as his stay in Glasgow is set to come to an end in the summer as it stands, with no new contract extension proposed on his current deal that has just months to run.
With his reinstated importance under Michael Beale, it seemed that the 26-year-old could remain part of the plans for the remainder of the season and potentially beyond should the campaign finish well, with the Colombian so far bagging four SPFL goals and two assists since Beale’s arrival.
However, following reports in Italy (via the Daily Record) claiming that the striker’s agent, Alejandro Camano, had offered the player’s services to Inter, it could leave the Gers in limbo over Morelos’ immediate future.
The Latest: Inter interest
Speaking on The Rangers Review, Barrie revealed he was surprised to see links involving El Buffalo and the Serie A giants, saying:
“Just after his run in 2019, Inter Milan is still a pretty high level, but I think everyone thought that Morelos was destined to go and play in the Big Five leagues – he was the top scorer in the Europa League that season, for a period of time, anyway.
“Obviously, there’s a difference between a club being interested and a player being offered up to a club – we don’t know what the situation is with Morelos here in particular.
“Inter Milan, that would be a big move; I’d be surprised if that were to happen.”
The Verdict: Tough decision
Morelos has been one of Rangers’ era-defining players since their return to the upper echelons of Scottish football, with him bagging 119 goals and 55 assists in 252 games.
It would’ve been expected given his expiring contract and losing his place to Antonio Colak at the start of the season who started the first 14 SPFL games, that Morelos would cast glances elsewhere.
But the news almost certainly won’t go down well with Beale, who has put faith in the Colombian to once again be Rangers’ talisman with him starting five times in seven games under the Englishman.
This could now leave a scenario where they may look to cash in as Morelos’ agent attempts to drum up interest ahead of a free transfer in five months’ time, with interest potentially harder to find than during the 30-goal 2018/19 campaign and 29-goal 2019/20 term that Barrie mentioned.
