With Liverpool reportedly looking for a new left back, Alvaro Pereira is the latest name to join Marcell Jansen and Ally Cissokho as a transfer target for the Reds.
Having already missed out on Gael Clichy to Manchester City, and offloaded Paul Konchesky to Leicester, Liverpool are light on defensive options, and the Porto man could prove to be a quality, albeit expensive, signing for the club.
Pereira has performed exceptionally well for Porto in his two seasons there, both domestically and in the continental competitions. He has built on this form and represented his nation, Uruguay, well, amassing 30 appearances and 5 goals form his usual position of left wing-back.
Should Pereira join Liverpool, he will join international teammate Luis Suarez, both of whom are currently representing Uruguay at the Copa America, and it is likely that it is Pereira’s high-end performances at the Copa America that have caught Kenny Dalglish’s eye. Reports in A bola, a leading Portuguese sports newspaper, claim that Porto would be unwilling to sell, and should Dalglish want his man, the owners may need to back him with €20M which would meet the 25 year-old defender’s release clause.
