The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping a handful of their youth players will break into the first-team squad next season, but recent reports from Portugal suggest that some of their academy prospects could face fresh competition from a rising star in Europe.
With the likes of Phil Foden, Brahim Diaz and Lukas Nmecha knocking on the door for a place in the senior squad, Pep Guardiola will have some important decisions to make on their futures this summer. A loan move might be in their best interests, but on the other hand, the eccentric Spaniard will be eager to keep them in Manchester where he can personally monitor their development.
However, recent reports would suggest that Nmecha will definitely be allowed to leave on loan this summer as he could be set to face fresh competition from Rafael Leao. According to Jornal de Noticias (via talkSPORT), Man City are interested in signing the 19-year-old this summer – one of a handful of players who are trying to cancel their contract with the club following a shocking training ground incident involving the supporters.
The report also claims that City are willing to pay Sporting Lisbon a fee in order to avoid any potential legal repercussions which could emerge in light of a transfer, so it seems clear the Citizens are eager to conclude a deal.

In the U19 UEFA Youth League, Leao bagged an impressive 5 goals from 6 appearances, including 3 against Juventus and a 90th minute equaliser against Barcelona.
With only 5 senior appearances to his name, all of which were made as a substitute, it’s difficult to judge Leao’s level of potential at this stage, but if he has been identified by scouts at Manchester City as a player worth pursuing, the supporters can rest easy in the knowledge that he is destined for an incredibly bright future in European football.
