Report: Pep Guardiola receives transfer blow as £25m target chooses Barcelona

The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are familiar with rumours linking their club with a move for Riyad Mahrez and Jorginho, but one of their less known targets appears to have slipped through the net.

Although potential deals for Mahrez and Jorginho are yet to be confirmed, it feels a matter of when not if those players will be officially announced as Man City players this summer. However, it appears that Pep Guardiola is also interested in signing a young talent emerging from Ajax in the shape Frenkie de Jong, although he is set to miss out on him to his former club Barcelona.

According to a report from talkSPORT, de Jong has asked to leave Ajax this summer in search of a move to the Catalan giants, despite interest from both City and Paris Saint-Germain. The report also claims that Ajax are reluctant to allow another young talent to depart this summer after Justin Kluivert completed a move to Roma, but a bid in the region of £25 million should prove decisive in negotiations.

Landlord’s verdict

Our landlord believes that Guardiola will not be too disappointed by de Jong’s decision as long as he is able to complete the signing of Jorginho.

City’s options in central midfield are relatively sparse at the moment so the club need to add proven quality this summer to ensure they can cope with injuries and suspensions.

Now that the de Jong deal appears to be off, it’s time for Guardiola to finally seal the signing of Jorginho to add a huge layer of quality to his midfield options.
