Carl Jenkinson’s time at Arsenal might be coming to an end. The 27-year-old right-back has been with the Gunners for eight years but his current deal expires in summer 2020 and Celtic are said to be eyeing a move.
According to Football Insider, the Hoops are interested in bringing in Jenkinson seeing as their trio of right-backs, Mikael Lustig, Cristian Gamboa and Jeremy Toljan are all leaving Glasgow this summer.
One problem or potential sticking point in this supposed deal is the fact that Jenkinson is currently earning a cool £45,000 p/w at The Emirates, Spotrac, and if he’s to sign for Celtic he’d apparently have to take a pay cut of about £15,000 p/w to join the Scottish giants.
When out on the pitch, Jenkinson is certainly a tidy enough player. In his seven appearances this season for the Gunners, he’s averaged 1.2 tackles and 1.8 clearances per game, as per WhoScored, so does appear to have a resoluteness about him.
Obviously, there isn’t a huge amount of data to go off considering his lack of appearances in recent years but Lee Dixon did tell Football.London in April that the former Charlton ace was a ‘sponge’ for information, willing to learn and that he believes Jenkinson had the tools to become a top player.
It doesn’t look like these rumours will go away either. Football Insider reported last week that Arsenal had offered Jenkinson as one of a selection of players in a player-plus-cash deal for Kieran Tierney, which the Bhoys turned down, indicating that the Gunners are open to allowing the 27-year-old to leave.
Neil Lennon isn’t only looking at Jenkinson as he’s supposedly just one name on the Bhoys’ shortlist, but as West Brom also hold an interest in the player, Lennon and company might have to work fast if they want a fairly strong defender who retains support from ex-pros in the game.
