Coulibaly’s Old Firm absence was gutting for Rangers fans

On Sunday Rangers lost the first Old Firm derby of the season when they travelled to Parkhead and lost 1-0 courtesy of an Olivier Ntcham second-half winner. Steven Gerrard’s side fought well for most of the game but lacked that extra bit of a quality. Not having Lassana Coulibaly available was an obvious loss for the club and the fans knew it.

Overall, the supporters were delighted to see that they’d gone with such a strong lineup at the home of their biggest rivals, however, it simply wasn’t to be. Gerrard pulled no punches as he went into the game with both Alfredo Morelos and new signing Kyle Lafferty leading his line, but in hindsight, if he had Coulibaly fit it would have made more sense to drop one of the two and put the Malian into the middle to help dictate the play.

The 22-year-old midfielder hasn’t featured since the club’s 2-0 home win over St Mirren back in early August. He hobbles off in the closing minutes of that fixture with a hamstring injury and then missed Europan qualifiers against Maribor and Ufa and a Scottish Premier League clash against Motherwell. It was believed he’d be back for the huge early season meeting with The Hoops, but he wasn’t able to make the side and the Gers suffered because of that.
