This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.
It is always a bonus when you pick up a top talent on a free transfer.
Rangers have picked up plenty in recent years, such as Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield and Jon Flanagan, for example, and Ryan Jack is another who did not cost the Ibrox outfit a single penny, and he has proven to be a revelation since moving to Glasgow.
By the time he signed for Rangers in July 2017, he was already a seasoned Scottish Premiership player, having spent all of his career at that point at Aberdeen – that led to him making 250 appearances in all competitions for the Dons, whilst he was even their captain at the end.
Has Ryan Jack been Rangers' best player this season?
His first season at Ibrox was a rather quiet one – he would feature just 21 times in all competitions, providing two assists. From there, though, his importance to Steven Gerrard’s squad would grow and grow. During the 2018/19 campaign, he played 39 times, providing four goals and five assists, and this term he has managed five and four respectively in 38 games.
Such has been the quality of his displays so far, he was even named as the Gers’ Player of the Year so far by The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell – which is even more impressive considering striker Alfredo Morelos has managed 29 goals in all competitions to date.
His £1.53m Transfermarkt value may not be massive, but it is worth mentioning that his value was only at £630,000 when he completed his transfer. There is no doubt that he has been a fantastic signing by the 54-time Scottish champions, especially considering he cost them nothing by way of a transfer fee.
