The Leeds fans in the Transfer Tavern have been discussing the future of their hot-headed right-back, Gaetano Berardi, in response to a story in the Yorkshire Evening Post. The Swiss international was given his marching orders for the third time this season in the 1-1 draw against Sunderland at Elland Road just over a week ago and will miss the rest of the season with his suspension.

If there’s one thing the Leeds fans can’t argue, it’s that Gaetano Berardi wears his heart on his sleeve and gives everything for the cause everytime he steps out onto the grass in a Leeds United shirt. Although it’s that exact passion and fight that could cost him a career with the Yorkshire club. The defender was sent off for a headbutt in the club’s 3-0 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate last year and then was given his second dismissal for two bookable offences as his side fell to a 4-1 defeat at Cardiff.
Whilst one red card a season is bad, and two is pushing it, to have been sent off three times in a single season is criminal. Football fans love a cult hero, although Berardi is taking that to the edge with his reckless style. If the Swiss right-back is to keep his dream alive at Elland Road, he’ll need to find a way to control his passion, despite recently stating that he “cannot curb the fire inside him.” For the Leeds fans, this is a strange one, off the pitch Berardi is honest, calm and collected, however, when on the pitch his passion comes out in full flow, making him an unpredictable man to handle.

Definitely, he wears his heart on his sleeve and gives everything for the cause, something that quite a few of the team simply do not. It’s baffling how so many supporters are turning on him, when he was once held as the perfect example of LUFC grit and spirit.
