According to Sky Sports, Man Utd are looking at signing Leicester City defender Harry Maguire, who the Red Devils rate at £65 million. The Englishman has gained cult hero status in England this summer following on from his excellent form for his country at the World Cup. He currently plays for Leicester City, and he’s clearly a great player.
However, it’s tough to look at this deal and not think that it could be based on his impressive World Cup form.
The Englishman was solid last season, but nobody was waxing lyrical about him until he did it on the world stage, and so it is a bit of a risk to sign him based mainly on a few performances over the course of a few weeks.
Perhaps, then, Jose Mourinho should look elsewhere – and fortunately for him, there is no shortage of top talent across Europe.
In truth, he could find a much better player than Maguire, as the Englishman has been a bit overrated following his World Cup heroics.
With that said, here are 2 seriously talented alternatives to Harry Maguire for Man Utd…
Jamaal Lascelles is another one of England’s most talented defenders, and he was unfortunate not to be involved in England’s World Cup squad over the summer.
The Newcastle captain has been a vital member of the first team at St James’ Park in recent years, and with good reason.
Offering brilliant leadership and quality at the back, the 24-year-old is only getting better at the moment, it seems.
Jose Mourinho would surely turn him into one of the Premier League’s best.
Kostas Manolas is well-known for his quality at the back, and Man Utd would be wise to invest.
The Greek centre-half has been sensational for Roma over the last few years, offering tremendous quality defensively, as well as offering a sustained threat going forward from set pieces.
He’s got tremendous experience both on the domestic stage and the continental stage, and Mourinho will value that.
He would be a huge upgrade. There aren’t many other defenders in Europe with his quality, and he’d be right at home at Old Trafford.
