Sheffield United remain in the hunt for promotion to the Premier League following a great start to the Championship season.
Chris Wilder’s side currently sit in the playoffs after 18 matches so far, having scored 29 goals in the process.
However, it appears as though the Blades will look to add firepower to their squad in the January transfer window.
Wilder is thought to be keen to add to his frontline to help aid their promotion chances and sees the Republic of Ireland international as the ideal person to help them achieve those aims.
And, it is believed he could look to try and take advantage of the situation Long currently finds himself in at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
The experienced striker is behind the likes of Danny Ings, Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini and does not appear to have a key role in Mark Hughes’ current plans.
The Verdict:

Long would be an excellent addition to Sheffield United in January, should he be made available.
The Blades could do with someone of his experience to help them in the final part of the season and would give them a good chance of remaining in the hunt for promotion to the Premier League.
However, a move to Bramall Lane could be out of Wilder’s hands, as the future around Hughes currently brings uncertainty to Southampton and could have an effect on which players leave in the winter if he is sacked.
