Sheffield Wednesday are expected to sign Stoke City striker Lee Gregory this summer.
The Lowdown: Sheff Wed plan for League One
The Owls suffered the heartbreak of relegation from the Championship last season, with their fate sealed on the final day of the campaign.
With a host of out-of-contract players leaving Hillsborough this summer, Darren Moore will understandably be desperate to bring in new faces.
The manager needs to perfect his squad ahead of life in the third tier, in order for Wednesday to make a swift return to the Championship.
Will Josh Windass stay at Sheffield Wednesday?
The Latest: Gregory tipped to join Owls
That would allow Wednesday to snap up the 32-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County, on a free transfer..
The Verdict: Shrewd signing by Moore
Gregory has scored 112 goals in 313 career appearances, per Transfermarkt, showing exactly why he would be a good signing for the Owls.
The fact that he would be dropping down a division also hopefully means he would stand out even more as player, given his pedigree in front of goal – he bagged three times in just six starts while on loan with the Rams.
Gregory has a huge amount of experience, and while his time at Stoke wasn’t too productive – seven goals in 50 matches – the hope is that a fresh challenge brings the best out of him.
In other news, an ex-Sheff Wed player has taken a swipe at his former Owls manager. Find out more about the story here.
