Everton supporters were left drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern on Sunday night after seeing the Toffees go down 2-0 away at Leicester City in the Premier League, a result which keeps the Merseyside outfit in the relegation zone.
David Unsworth took charge of his first league game as temporary boss at the King Power Stadium and there was some renewed optimism among our resident Toffees following an improved display against Chelsea in midweek, but that was soon banished by Claude Puel’s Foxes. Jamie Vardy’s sixth Premier League goal of the campaign sent the hosts on their way and Jonjoe Kenny’s unfortunate own goal left Everton with a mountain to climb, and it’s one they couldn’t manage as they suffered a sixth league defeat of the season, in turn keeping them 18th in the Premier League table.
Thus, several of our resident Evertonians were frustrated and disappointed with their side despite an improved effort in the second half, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that their team have lost three of their last four league games, and appear to find themselves in a relegation battle at this early stage of the campaign.
And the Toffees’ failure to net at the King Power Stadium leaves them with a meagre tally of just seven goals in the top-flight so far this season, four of which have come from the boot of summer signing Wayne Rooney, who of course returned to Goodison Park from Manchester United.
However, the 32-year-old struggled to make a meaningful impact on proceedings on Sunday and as such was replaced by another summer arrival in Gylfi Sigurdsson with a quarter of an hour to go.
And several Everton supporters took to Twitter to express their views on Rooney’s display, and it’s fair to say that they were less than complimentary with their thoughts…
Rooney becoming a problem for EFC. Constantly dropping deep. Sloppy on the ball; lethargic. Slow. Needs taking out the side IMO

To stand a chance he needs to drop Rooney. And I can’t see him having the bottle to do so. #efc

Rooney was shocking today. Complacent, sloppy, slowed play down and took up too many positions he shouldn’t have leaving gaps up top #EFC

If rooney plays for Everton he had to play cm. Any other position and he kills the team too much by being out of position all the time

Sorry but Wayne Rooney shouldn’t be anywhere near our first team now. Lost the aggression that made him special years ago #efc

Drop Rooney being saying for weeks #EFC #Everton
