With their chances of signing Wesley Sneijder looking dead in the water, Manchester United have rekindled their interest in previous target, Mario Goetze.
Sir Alex Ferguson was believed to be interested in the German playmaker as far back as January, and he sees him as the final piece of the jigsaw needed to compliment an already strong United midfield.
Aged only 19, Goetze was a key part of Borussia Dortmund’s successful Bundesliga campaign last season, helping the former giants return to the top, winning them their first championship in nine years. His successful form also earned him a call up to the highly competitive German national side, where he went on to score a goal in his debut against Brazil.
Although Goetze acknowledges that there is an interest in his services from England, with Arsenal being the other team of note to be tracking his progress, he has claimed he is happy at Dortmund. Whilst not writing off a move to the Premier League, Goetze is more than content with the prospect of another season at the heart of the Dortmund attack, a season which will boast Champions League football for the first time in the players career.
With Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp reluctant to let Goetze leave, especially after already losing midfielder Nuri Sahin to Real Madrid earlier this summer, Tuttomercatoweb are reporting that they would be looking for a fee in the region of £20M.
With United having been backed strongly in the market this summer, it remains to be seen whether they will receive the further funding required to complete the deal, or whether funds need to be generated from sales, with Dimitar Berbatov reported as the likely candidate to be sold.
