All the signals coming from Eastlands over the last few weeks have pointed towards City boss Roberto Mancini spending big this summer. And where better to start than by raiding his native Serie A?
Napoli’s Slovak defender midfielder Marek Hamsik has come under the Italian’s radar prompting talk of an audacious bid for the 22-year-old who is expected to star in this summer’s World Cup. Napoli have so far rejected City’s advances but Hamsik is yet to agree an extension to his contract forcing the Azzurri to come to the negotiating table.
Hamsik has been one of Serie A’s most consistent performers and is seen as a key piece of the jigsaw at Napoli by manager Walter Mazzarri meaning that a hefty fee would be required to take him to England. That’s not a problem for Mancini’s employers but expect any successful bid to be in the region of £20-30m.
Mancini, who is planning a complete overhaul of the squad he inherited from Mark Hughes, views Hamsik as a big improvement on Stephen Ireland and Patrick Vierra and will do (or pay) whatever it takes to bring him in as part of a revamp.
With Champions League qualification non-negotiable next season, Hamsik will almost certainly be one of a handful of megabids made by the Blues this summer.

He will sell great, home-grown players like Stephen Ireland and Micah Richards because he hasn’t got the knowledge to use them!
