While Southampton’s budget doesn’t compare to some of their closest rivals, the Hampshire side have still managed to break their transfer record on several occasions in recent years. Centre-back Jannik Vestergaard became the club’s top signing after joining for £22.5m in July 2018, overtaking the £20.7m the board paid RB Salzburg for Sadio Mane all the way back in 2014.

Ralph Hassenhuttl’s men have conceded the second-highest amount of goals this term and their defensive struggles will be the Austrian’s primary area of concern heading into the upcoming transfer window. The loan arrival of Kyle Walker-Peters hasn’t quite worked out as well as hoped, with James Ward-Prowse ably filling in at the back, and the Saints are eyeing moves for Joakim Maehle and Diogo Leite.
