Fee for Edwards set

The Saints have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who made the switch to Guimaraes on a free transfer from Tottenham in September of last year.

Now, with the likes of West Ham and Crystal Palace in pursuit, it has been reported that the south-coast side will need to pay £14m for the winger’s services.

Potential bargain

Edwards barely ever got a look in at Spurs, making just one senior appearance for the club before departing for Portugal. However, he has impressed with his new club, managing to rack up nine goals and as many assists in all competitions last season.

In July, Vitoria boss Ivo Vieira said he was worth up to €30m (£27.6m), meaning that this fee of £14m would represent a significant discount. Edwards is a player with plenty of ability – he was previously compared to Lionel Messi by former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, after all – and he would likely be a huge asset for Southampton if Ralph Hasenhuttl and co could beat the plethora of clubs interested in his services.
