According to German source Bild, Southampton have entered the picture to sign Union Berlin attacker Taiwo Awoniyi as the south coast club start eyeing fresh summer additions for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The Lowdown: Summer transfer window looming...

Saints transfer chief Martin Semmens has reportedly been weighing up summer moves already as he aims to back his manager in the next transfer market.

Having been tipped with a possible £25m bid to make Armando Broja's loan deal permanent in January, links have since emerged to new targets, including FC Koln defender Timo Hubers, who could be available for as little as £6m.

Now clear and safe from relegation for another year, Southampton arguably need to start planning for the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, with news emerging of an in-form attacker now on their radar in Awoniyi.

The Latest: Saints enter picture for Awoniyi...

As per Bild, the Saints are among a number of Premier League clubs in the picture to sign Union's in-demand striker.

It is believed that Southampton are joined by West Ham and Newcastle United as the interested trio from England, and Awoniyi now looks set to move, with the outlet claiming that he 'will leave' this summer.

In another possible boost, he is said to be valued at an arguably affordable price of €30m (£25m).

The Verdict: Shrewd target...

For £25m, the Nigeria international could be a shrewd alternative to Broja in the striking position given his solid return of 12 goals in 25 Bundesliga appearances over 2021/22.

German top-flight critics have also been quick to point out the 'remarkable' season that Awoniyi is having at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei (Stefan Bienkowski, Twitter), potentially marking him out as a player who could seriously strengthen Hasenhuttl's options.

Standing at a powerful 6 foot tall, the in-form centre-forward also possesses a suitable physicality for English football, and it's little surprise that the Saints have taken a keen interest in his services.
