Tottenham: Interest in Djed Spence ‘starting to ramp up’

Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, Scotland, Britain - July 23, 2022. Tottenham Hotspur's Djed Spence reacts.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence is starting to attract ‘interest’ ahead of a potential loan exit this month, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

The Lowdown: Spurs open to Spence exit

The former England under-21 international sealed his long-awaited move to the capital from Middlesbrough last summer but hasn’t had the start to life n N17 that he would have hoped, having been nothing more than a fringe player under Antonio Conte.

The right-back has made zero starts and just four substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season, with reports suggesting that the Lilywhites are open to sanctioning a temporary move away this month to allow him more game-time.

Several clubs, including West Ham and Southampton, are queueing up to secure his services until the end of the campaign, so it’s likely that he will get a fresh start elsewhere.

The Latest: Taylor’s verdict

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Taylor claimed that Spence is being considered by many clubs and stated that it wouldn’t be a shock if the 22-year-old were to leave Tottenham before the transfer deadline on Tuesday.

He said: “I think with Spence, there is interest in him now. It’s starting to ramp up a little bit, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he departs.”

The Verdict: Correct call

Spence has been described as a ‘combative’ player by Ian Wright, and allowing him to go out on loan would be completely the right decision so that he can showcase what he has to offer.

The former Nottingham Forest loanee excelled during his spell at the City Ground in 2021/22, providing five assists and even scoring three goals himself (Transfermarkt).

The Spurs starlet also currently ranks in the 99th percentile for dribbles completed per 90 minutes among right-backs in Europe’s top leagues over the past 12 months, which will surely be a hugely attractive attribute to potential suitors.

Spence would likely flourish if he were to be given a regular run of games elsewhere, and there’s no reason why he couldn’t then be ready to challenge for a place in the first-team upon his return to Tottenham.
