Everton head into the third international break of the season with 19 points from their opening 12 games in the Premier League.
As well as recruiting Marco Silva to replace Sam Allardyce, the Toffees also made a significant change to their scouting department – bringing in former PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands. Silva and Brands worked extensively during their first transfer window together, and Everton’s buys have made a great start to life at Goodison Park. Both Richarlison and Lucas Digne have slotted into the starting eleven seamlessly with Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina showing glimpses of their quality.
The January transfer window is now less than two months away, and the duo will have the opportunity to work their magic once again. With Cenk Tosun failing to find the back of the net consistently this season, Silva may be tempted to dip into the market for some attacking reinforcements. One man he should target is a someone who Brands will be very familiar with – PSV Eindhoven wonderkid – Steven Bergwijn.
Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the winger is emerging as one of the Eredivisie’s hottest prospects after playing a starring role during last season’s title-winning season. Bergwijn was in fantastic form in front of goal, netting eight while creating a further seven for his team-mates. The 21-year-old has started the new campaign in the same rich vein of form with five goals and six assists during his first 11 Eredivisie appearances.
The youngster is blessed with terrifying pace which would make him a nightmare for Premier League defenders. As well as being lightning fast, Bergwijn possesses excellent dribbling ability – the youngster has averaged an incredible three successful dribbles per game this season; more than any other player in the entire Premier League this season (WhoScored). The Dutchman has already shown that he has an eye for goal and being surrounded with better quality players will only increase his output.
Everton should be looking to reunite Brands with Bergwijn as soon as possible.
