The Potters are a Championship club who have spent big in previous transfer windows, and the majority of these players have arrived during Stoke’s ten most recent seasons in the Premier League, from 2008-2018. The Potters have spent over £10m on a player nine times, and the £20m mark has been broken just once back in the summer of 2015-16.
The DR Congo international, Giannelli Imbula joined Stoke for £21.83m which was a club record fee, and the young defensive Midfielder who arrived from Porto immediately impressed fans. Despite this, Imbula had made a poor start to the 2016-17 Premier League campaign and was dropped from the side by manager Mark Hughes.
Imbula had many ups and downs throughout the season and was left out of the side more than being included, making only 14 appearances. In the summer of 2017, Imbula went out on loan to Toulouse, and then to Rayo Vallecano the following season, before ending up at Serie A side Lecce ahead of the current 2019-20 season.
On March 3 2020, Imbula finally moved on from Stoke to join Russian Premier League club PFC Sochi for free as the Potters transfer nightmare ended with a £20m+ loss.
Another big money arrival and transfer flop was Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer who joined Stoke from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017-18. Wimmer arrived for a hefty £17.5m fee, and he only made 17 appearances for the Potters before being sent out on loan to Hannover 96, and then Royal Excel Mouscron where he is currently playing. It is uncertain whether or not the Austrian international will feature back in Stokes starting 11 when he arrives back at the club, and a loss is looking more than likely.
In terms of record transfer departures from the Potters, one man crushes the list – Marko Arnautovic. The Austrian star man joined Stoke in 2013 as he left Werder Bremen for just £2.5m. After a very successful career for the Potters, Arnautovic racked up an impressive 125 games, scoring 22 goals.
It was not until Stokes final season in the Premier League that the 6ft 4in striker caught the eye of rivals West Ham United, and in the summer transfer window of 2017-18, he joined the Hammers for a massive £20m fee which was over double the previous fee set by Asmir Begovic two seasons before.
One of Stoke’s most famous transfers was Champions League winner Xherdan Shaqiri who extraordinarily arrived from giants Inter Milan in 2015, for a massive £15m sum.
The Swiss international played 84 games for the Potters scoring 15 goals on the wing, and in the summer of 2018-19 he caught the eye of Premier League giants Liverpool who snapped him up for just over £13m, making him the second-highest sale in club history.
