Sunderland: Black Cats eye Jamal Lowe -Sunderland News

Sunderland are currently trailing Watford in the race to sign Jamal Lowe from Bournemouth, according to Football League World

The lowdown

Sunderland have brought in six new players so far this summer following their promotion to the Championship.

Daniel Ballard is perhaps the marquee addition, having joined from Arsenal for more than £2million, but Leon Dajaku (£783,000), Ali Ajese (£531,000), Jack Clarke (undisclosed), Alex Bass (undisclosed) and Ellis Simms (loan) have also strengthened the squad.

28-year-old right winger Lowe made 34 appearances for Bournemouth in the second tier last season but has been restricted to a single minute of game time across their first three Premier League fixtures (against Manchester City).

As FLW note, he ‘seems to have fallen out of favour’ after the Cherries returned to the top-flight.

The latest

FLW report that Bournemouth are open to letting Lowe leave on loan before the end of the transfer window.

Several Championship sides are in the running for his signature, with Watford thought to be at the front of the queue.

They’re ahead of fellow relegated sides Norwich and Burnley, as well as Sunderland.

The Black Cats have ‘shown interest’ in Lowe but will now need to leapfrog the Hornets.

Sunderland fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the 21/22 season?

The verdict

Lowe would be a smart addition for Sunderland.

He recorded nine direct goal contributions in as many starts for Bournemouth last season, with the lion’s share of his outings coming as a substitute.

Lowe is also capable of the spectacular, having earned a nominated for the 2020/21 Championship Goal of the Season Award after ‘a superb individual goal‘ for Swansea against rivals Cardiff.

Manager Scott Parker has hailed him as ‘first class‘, and while he may be down the pecking order at the Vitality Stadium, he could certainly help Sunderland.
