Sunderland’s plans to sign Burnley striker Will Harris have been thrown in to doubt, according to the Northern Echo.
With the League One season now done and dusted, Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson will look to rebuild his side ahead of the 2020/2021 campaign.
The summer transfer window could see a number of new faces arrive at the Stadium of Light and one of them was expected to be Harris. The young defender turned striker spent time on trial with Sunderland at the start of 2020 after having a good spell on loan with Warrington Town.
Making one appearance for Burnley’s under-23 side, the goalscorer will see his contract come to an end at Turf Moor at the end of June.
According to The Echo, Sunderland informed Harris of their intention to sign him this summer shortly after his trial at the club.
However that deal is now in doubt due to the current climate, as the Wearside club look to tie down a number of first team players as their first priority before looking into the summer window to bring in new faces.
Harris’ lack of first team experience would have been unlikely to see him get in to Sunderland’s first team, although he could have been handed a chance to impress in Elliot Dickman’s under-23 side whilst being a back-up option to the first team.
This should come as little surprise really. The pandemic has thrown every football club new challenges to face and naturally, we may see a more cautious approach in the transfer window.
Nevertheless, Harris is a young player who is set to become a free agent, so it is not like there is big money involved with this potential deal. You would imagine that once the contract situations with some of their first team players are resolved, this one should then go through.
