A lot of Sunderland fans are reminiscing over former player Jan Kirchhoff after the club posted an image of him in a throwback on Twitter.
Kirchhoff made the £900,000 move to England from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich whilst the Black Cats were still in the Premier League, per Transfermarkt.
In his first season (2015/16), the midfielder impressed fans at the club, and his statistics show why. Over the 14 appearances made, he averaged 3.5 tackles per game and 2.1 interceptions per game, per WhoScored, highlighting that he was key at breaking up opposition attacks.
It looked like an astute signing for the team, but he started to have injury problems in the summer of 2016 and missed 33 games the next season, per Transfermarkt.
Due to this he was let go by the club and now finds himself in the German third tier, but fans still remember how great he was in that first season, and this throwback tweet was enough for some to ask for him to come back, with one saying, ‘Bring him home’.
Here is what fans said following the tweet:

In my 57 years of watching #safc he was one of the most gifted players I’ve seen. Unfortunately he could get injured just coming down the tunnel!
