Sunderland set to battle for Lawrence Shankland

Sunderland have certainly started to enjoy their football on the pitch this season, haven’t they? The Black Cats are on the verge of having a really successful season with the possibility of promotion back to the Championship and lifting the EFL Trophy.

Jack Ross added the likes of Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke to their striking department over the course of the season, however, it appears he could target a forward that he knows rather well.

What’s the News?

According to a report by The Daily Star, Sunderland are set to battle a number of English and Scottish clubs for Lawrence Shankland.

The prolific 23-year-old, who has netted 31 goals in his 33 appearances across all competitions for Ayr United this season, is set to leave the club once his contract expires in the summer.

The Verdict:

It would make sense for Sunderland to look at potential reinforcements once again in the summer and there will not be many available in the summer for free that are better than Shankland.

Grigg struggled in the Championship during his time at Wigan Athletic, whilst Keziah Sterling will return to Tottenham Hotspur once his loan spell at the Stadium of Light comes to an end.

Having played with Ross, he could immediately fit straight into the team and hit the ground running on Wearside and help the Black Cats continue their upwards trajectory.

The 23-year-old clearly has plenty of potential to become a real hit in the future and his former manager could be the best person to try and help take the Scottish talent to the next stage of his career.

With him being available for nothing, he should be someone that Sunderland look take what could be considered a rather low-risk acquisition – even if he were unable to return even half the figures that he has managed to produce at Ayr United this season.
