Sunderland have offered a new contract to Tom Flanagan whose current contract at the Stadium of Light comes to an end on June 30.
The Wearside club are set to make wholesome changes to their squad this summer with boss Phil Parkinson looking to attempt a rebuild after seeing his side fail to gain promotion.
Set for a third consecutive season in England’s third tier, Sunderland ended up finishing eighth position in the League One table after the 2019/2020 campaign came to an end via a points-per-game system.
With a number of contracts set to expire come the end of the month, the club have now revealed that new deals have been offered to three players.
Flanagan arrived at the Stadium of Light in 2018 from Burton Albion and he has since gone on to become a first team regular at the club.
Making 18 appearances in the league this term, the 28-year-old bagged himself one goal as he occupied the centre-back role for Parkinson’s side whilst also helping the team keep six clean sheets, including four in a row throughout February.
Along with a new contract offer for Flanagan, Parkinson is also hoping to keep hold of Chris Maguire and goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.
Along with Maguire and McLaughlin, Flanagan’s new contract offer will force him to make a tough decision this summer.
After failing to gain promotion and with much uncertainty at the club, the Republic of Ireland born defender may opt to leave the club. But, with Parkinson obviously keen to keep him, it must mean that the ex-Bolton manager plans to make him a key part of the team next season.
Keeping some form of continuity would be a big boost for the Black Cats and so it would be huge for them if Flanagan, along with Maguire and McLaughlin, agreed to extend his stay.
