Luton Town have emerged as rivals to Sunderland for the summer signing of former Manchester United youngster Demetri Mitchell.
Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson is seeking promotion to the Championship in 2021 and he has already made some summer signings, bringing in Bailey Wright and Aiden O’Brien, whilst Tom Flanagan signed a new deal to remain at the club.
With the 2020/21 season fast approaching, transfer gossip continues to develop at the Stadium of Light, with Parkinson’s determination to bring in some defenders having seen former Everton defender Luke Garbutt being linked with a move to Wearside.
Whilst interest in Garbutt has emerged, it has also been claimed by The Northern Echo that former Manchester United defender Mitchell is also on the club’s radar, having been training with the Wearsiders.
The Hatters finished 19th in the Championship last season after fighting off the threat of relegation and their manager Nathan Jones is seemingly keen to bolster his squad ahead of next term.
Mitchell has been afflicted by injury problems in his career could be a concern for Parkinson but, having developed through Manchester United’s academy and played in the Premier League, he could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Sunderland if they can get him.
The chance to move to the Championship, however, would seemingly be a good one for the youngster, which unfortunately may give Luton the edge in the race for his signature.
