Sunderland: James Hunter says club may be ‘close’ to Patrick Roberts signing -Sunderland Transfer Rumours

James Hunter has said that Sunderland may now be ‘close’ to signing Patrick Roberts in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: More to come?

The Black Cats confirmed the signing of central defender Danny Batth from Stoke City on Tuesday evening, and it looks like Lee Johnson is now focusing on strengthening in attacking areas.

They have recently been linked with the likes of Peterborough United striker Jonson Clarke-Harris and a even return for Jermain Defoe to the Stadium of Light, and so the next few days may well be busy ones for the board on Wearside.

The Latest: Roberts in?

As per The Chronicle journalist James Hunter, SAFC are now ‘close’ to securing another signing, and he was told that Roberts was on Wearside, hinting at a potential move:

“Several people telling me #safc are close to another signing.

“And was told yesterday that Patrick Roberts was on Wearside.

“No confirmation as yet, though, so be aware that nothing is done until it’s done.”

The Verdict: Sign him up!

It would be some statement if Sunderland could prize Roberts away from Manchester City.

Currently on loan at Troyes in Ligue 1, he has won numerous trophies and has experience of playing at the highest level, notably in the Premier League.

Roberts also only has six months left on his current contract at the Etihad Stadium, and so he is a player that the Black Cats can seemingly get on the cheap, whether that would be this month or on a free in the summer with a pre-contract agreement.

Should Sunderland start Roberts?

Yes

No

No

Nonetheless, the winger is rated higher by Johnson himself, who recently called him a ‘top player‘ after being asked about him by the media, and Roberts was even nicknamed ‘Mini Messi‘ when he was coming up through the youth ranks at Fulham.

Nonetheless, at 24 years of age, the Englishman still has a lot of potential left to fulfil, and SAFC would do very well to attract him to League One.
