After such a dismal season, things can only get better from here for the club, but they will need to complete a handful of new signings to ensure they challenge for promotion in League One.
After experiencing some success with the loan acquisition of Ovie Ejaria from Liverpool, Sunderland should consider adopting a similar strategy in the coming months and target quality young players from top-six Premier League clubs.
With that in mind, Ross would be wise to raid Liverpool once again for a bright young talent who is likely to be surplus to requirements at Anfield this summer, namely Taiwo Awoniyi.
The Nigerian youth star is set to return to Merseyside after a season long loan spell with Royal Excel Mouscron in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League in which he managed to score 10 goals and provide 7 assists from 31 appearances in all-competitions.
The 20-year-old played a crucial role in the club’s survival bid with his quality in the final-third, and the level he reached suggests he could become a resounding success in League One with Sunderland.
Now that Liverpool and Sunderland have established a relationship from the Ejaria deal, Ross’ chances of completing a loan deal for Owiniyi should be very strong indeed and, on the premise that Klopp is willing to allow the youngster to depart in the future, an option to buy should also be included as part of the deal.
