It’s safe to say that the Premier League has proven to be a baptism of fire for Pep Guardiola and things look to be slowing down for the Citizens as they look to maintain a weak title bid.
Our resident City fans in the Transfer Tavern are pretty adamant that their club need to strengthen in the middle of the park following news that Ilkay Gundogan is potentially out for the rest of the season and Fernandinho receiving a 4 match ban for his sending off against Burnely.
Still one of the most financed teams within the Premier League, it would be ludicrous to not expect City to dip into the transfer market for a midfielder with money seemingly never being any object for their oil-rich owners.
However, with that said – our landlord fears (just as the Premier League managers do) that it is difficult to sign the right player at a sensible price in January and City will be strong candidates to over-spend in this transfer window.
Anyway, here are four options that could definitely join the blue side of Manchester this month according to our landlord…
Steven N’Zonzi
With injuries and suspensions hampering the middle of the park at the Etihad, City may well look to get N’Zonzi following an impressive first half of the season in La Liga.
The former Blackburn and Stoke man has Premier League experience and with the games coming thick and fast for City in January, the previous experience in the Premier League may well tilt this deal over the line.
A move for N’Zonzi could be bad news for Fabian Delph, who is reportedly a target for Newcastle and could spell the end of his City career.
Koke
Our landlord reckons potential suitors for the Spanish midfielder will have to wait until the summer to sign the Atletico linch-pin, but the current situation of the Man City squad could well see this move develop quickly.
Koke reportedly has a €150 million (£130million) release clause in his contract and even though he possesses great quality, our resident City fans in the Transfer Tavern don’t believe the 24-year-old is worth that price tag.
If this move is to happen in January, our landlord expects City to be doing some heavy negotiating to get the price down.
Isco
Isco could finally be on his way to Eithad after he snubbed a move to the Citizens in order to join current club, Real Madrid, in 2013.
It won’t be easy for City to get their man as Madrid use him as a strong back-up but the promise of first team football could be more than enough to bring him in.
City fans in the tavern are excited about any prospect of Isco, who at 24-years-old, still seemingly has his best years ahead of him.
Jack Wilshere
There is no doubt that Wilshere moving to City would be one of the major shocks of this January transfer window if the move occurs.
The Arsenal man, on loan at Bounemouth, is yet to be offered a new contract by his parent club despite having only 18 months left to go and City are reportedly monitoring his situation.
Our landlord believes a move to City would be hard to turn down for Wilshere, who still is not guaranteed first team football at Arsenal when he returns from his loan.
