We all agree here in the Football Transfer Tavern that January signings can be extremely hit and miss. For every Luis Suarez, there appears to be an Andy Carroll.
Managers often tell us that there are few options available in January for a decent price, and moves are often born out of necessity than desire.
Clubs who have had a difficult first half of the campaign see the window as a chance to put things right, but pressure from fans and with clubs pushing the fees up even more than usual, this means big money January moves are often a recipe for disaster.
But there are the occasions when a piece of January business proves inspired, and goes some way to turning not only the second half of the season around, but also things for the foreseeable future.
