It has been a very turbulent few years for the London-based side; filled with massive highs and crushing lows – and everything in between.
There have been some great decisions by the club, and there have been some not so great decisions. Being a Chelsea fan is not always fun, but it is always eventful.
Much attention is often placed on the negative aspects of Chelsea from rival fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern – and our landlord thinks that the criticism that the club gets is unfair.
He thinks that some attention should be placed on some good decisions by the club in recent years.
With that said, these are the THREE best things Chelsea have done in the last 5 years – Agreed?
Brought back Jose Mourinho
It might not look as good right now; but bringing back Jose Mourinho was a masterstroke by Roman Abramovich.
Following the departure of some high profile Chelsea stars, as well as the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and subsequent hiring of Rafael Benitez – the Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern had a sour taste in their mouth.
For the first time since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, Roman Abramovich was turning heads at Chelsea for the wrong reasons – and the fans were beginning to turn on the Russian businessman.
The arrival of Jose Mourinho helped to get fans back on side, with many supporters seeing the decision as a fresh start.
It didn’t turn out the way that everyone had hoped, but signing Mourinho solved, if only temporarily, Chelsea’s issues – and his tenure lasted long enough that the fans forgot what had preceded it
Retained John Terry
John Terry epitomises everything that makes Chelsea what it is.
He is the connection between the club and the fans, he is a lifelong Chelsea fan and he is somebody that the fans have the utmost faith in.
Pundits and so-called experts have called for JT’s departure for years, and every single time he has gone on to prove them wrong.
Be it during the 2013-14 season, when JT played every single game en-route to a Premier League title win, or his continued great form during the current campaign – Terry has always been a pivotal part of the Chelsea machine.
With so many leaders leaving the club in recent years, it was vital that Chelsea retained the biggest of them all.
Looked to the Future
This, in many ways, contradicts the previous argument; but in recent years Chelsea have done excellently to reduce the average age of the squad and invest in young talent.
The retention of John Terry is a separate issue; his presence at the club is necessary on so many levels.
Whilst keeping John Terry at the club might increase the average age of the club; the Blues must be given credit for ensuring that the first team squad is always built upon young, talented footballers.
For example, players like Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois have come in and replaced old-hands like Florent Malouda and Petr Cech.
It wasn’t nice for the fans nor the club to say goodbye to so many club legends – but for the long-term success of the club it was absolutely necessary.
Club legends like Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba have cemented their place in Chelsea history – but now is the time for new, young Chelsea stars to forge their name in the record books.
