If Chelsea and Roman Abramovich hadn’t made so many poor decisions in recent years, Chelsea could be at a completely different level right now.
With that said, are these the 3 KEY mistakes that Chelsea have made in the past 5 years?
Loss of Leadership
This is a collection of mistakes, rather than a single mistake – but they all fall under the same banner.
The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern were sad when Didier Drogba left the club, disappointed when Ashley Cole left the club – and absolutely devastated when Frank Lampard left the club.
Not only were Chelsea losing great players, they were, perhaps more importantly – losing leaders.
In an effort to cut the average age of the Chelsea squad, the Blues brass took out the heart of the club – and that proved vital as Chelsea crashed to a 10th place finish in the 2015/16 season.
Poor transfer business
Much has been made of Chelsea’s transfer business in recent years. Whilst their business, at the time, is often greeted with cheers from the Chelsea faithful – often it comes back to bite them years later.
For example, players like Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, Nemanja Matic and now Ryan Bertrand have all been sold by the club – only for them to turn players worth twice as much as they were sold for.
Now, years down the road – Chelsea are forced to pay twice as much for a player that isn’t as good as the one that they sold years prior.
In an era where Financial Fair Play reigns supreme, it is actually vital that clubs accurately manage their finances. And Chelsea simply haven’t done that in recent years.
Managerial Inconsistency
It has been a criticism that most of the punters here in the Football Transfer Tavern have had since Roman Abramovich has arrived – and it looks like the Russian Chelsea owner has no plans to change his methods.
Over the last few years, the Blues have continually hired and fired new managers on a whim – and as a result – the team has suffered.
Trophy success has reduced, whilst a failure to bring through young players can also be attributed to the short-sightedness of Chelsea management.
If Chelsea want to secure a legacy long term – they must give managers a chance to succeed.
