The 5 most bizarre Arsenal transfer rumours of all-time – Agreed?

With another second place for our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern to reflect on, it’s a case of what might have been once again.

For many at the start of the season, Arsenal were the favourites for the Premier League title.

The Gunners were going strong too but as the turn of the year came and the months following that things began to go south for the north Londoners, as Leicester won the league.

This means, yet again, the Emirates faithful are clambering to see who their team might sign in the summer window, and our Gunners fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate to see their club get someone who’s going to win them the title.

There’s lots of top class names doing the rounds but as always a few that are a bit left-field too.

It’s a feature of the transfer market that some weird rumours arise and our landlord at the Transfer Tavern has found FIVE of the oddest to have ever been linked with Arsenal……

Bafetimbi Gomis

Gomis

The Daily Express reported this one in the middle of the 2014/15 season.

The Swansea forward hasn’t exactly been prolific in his time at the Welsh club showing what he can do in very short stints, but this was apparently enough to attract Arsene Wenger’s interest.

It’s true Arsenal need extra strikers to compliment Olivier Giroud but Gunners fans wouldn’t have had Gomis in mind.

Jermain Defoe

At the end of the 2014/15 Summer transfer window the Gunners needed a striker with Giroud out injured, and things were getting desperate.

Defoe is a good striker as he’s shown with Sunderland, but as a man with obvious Tottenham ties the Arsenal fans would have probably preferred no-one to lead the line instead of the former Spurs man.

This one never came off surprisingly despite reports from the Mirror.

Hugo Lloris

When Olivier Giroud said his French team-mate Lloris might fancy a move to Arsenal the rumour mill went into overdrive.

The Spurs number one had to come out publicly and deny the rumours insisting he was happy at White Hart Lane, but that didn’t stop the story running for some time somehow.

The Frenchman would have been brave to cross this divide to say the least.

Abel Hernandez

The Metro brought us this one as recently as this January transfer window.

Hernandez has been a key part of Hull’s successful run to promotion from the Championship, but that is a very different level to Arsenal’s in all fairness.

In a season that’s seen Wenger’s critics increasingly become vociferous, this potential announcement might have just been the last straw for the Frenchman’s supporters too.

Troy Deeney

It’s the Metro again with this one!

It was obviously a transfer window for random lower Premier League to higher Championship level strikers to be linked with Arsenal as this story came in January 2016 too.

A substantial £20 million was touted to be enough to prise the forward away from Vicarage Road who admittedly has had a good season for Watford but arguably, he isn’t what the Gunners needed.
