Crystal Palace stretched their winless run to seven matches as Sheffield United snatched victory on Saturday, though it could have been a very different story but for a costly error from one individual.
Vicente Guaita has been one of the Eagles’ most consistent players this term and is frequently the subject of praise from fans, but at the weekend his own goal was the difference between the two sides. It was a poor goal to give away too, with the Spaniard catching the ball from a corner before stepping across his own goal line, though his high standing amongst supporters means he has escaped criticism.
Teammates such as Christian Benteke and James Tomkins almost brought the home side back into the game but it wasn’t to be for Roy Hodgson’s side, who now linger dangerously close to the relegation zone. Six points separate the London outfit from the bottom three but some fans have suggested that gap would be even less but for Guaita’s performances this campaign, which shows there is no ill-feeling towards the shot-stopper, despite the mistake.
Instead, there has been an outpour of support for the 33-year-old, with some amongst the Palace fanbase suggesting he is a club legend who they want to stay for a lengthy period.
