‘As far as holes in teams go, Everton will have the Grand Canyon to fill up front when Romelu Lukaku goes’ was the verdict of one Liverpool fan up by the bar in the Transfer Tavern amid the 23-year-old’s contract saga, and although Everton supporters were annoyed at his jibe, it’s fair to say there’s some logic to it.
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 24 hours, the Belgian striker has reportedly indicated to the Merseyside club that he has no intention of signing a new deal with them, despite his agent, Mino Raiola, having told talkSPORT recently that fresh terms were “99.99999999%” certain to be settled.
With 19 Premier League goals to his name this term, if he is to leave – which seems like the only logical conclusion to draw from this – this summer then Ronald Koeman will have to be supplied with a new centre-forward to lead the line at Goodison Park.
And it seems Everton fans have identified a target: Celtic’s Moussa Dembele. The Frenchman only joined the Bhoys last year from Fulham on a free transfer, but he’s been such a success in Scotland that Chelsea were reportedly after him in January.
With 29 goals in 38 games across the Champions League and Scotland’s three big domestic competitions, he’s clearly got the talent to back up the hype, which prompted our landlord to get on Twitter and see what’s being said…
Dembele has to be a target now #efc

@Everton if we’re going to sell Rom can we buy Mousa Dembele from Celtic

If we could get Dembele from Celtic to replace Lukaku that’ll be amazing but won’t happen

Mousse Dembele the obvious target, as far as I’m concerned. Right style & profile.#EFC

We’d have to invest nearly all of the Lukaku money but Moussa Dembele is someone who should surely be on our radar. Very similar in style.
