Manchester City supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their team come through three mammoth tests last week to maintain their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League, as well as extend their winning run to 20 games.
Pep Guardiola’s men were tipped by many to go on and win the title this term, and they have certainly lived up to expectations so far by winning 14 of their opening 15 league matches, although last week was certainly their toughest yet. They began it by needing an 84th minute winner from Raheem Sterling to see off Huddersfield Town, before the England international produced a moment of brilliance to secure a 2-1 victory over Southampton in midweek. And they again needed a late show to edge past resilient West Ham at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with second half goals from Nicolas Otamendi and David Silva enough to cancel out Angelo Ogbonna’s header a minute before the break.
Thus, there have been many buoyant City fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Express, which details quotes from Pat Nevin’s interview with Newstalk regarding some possible interest from the Citizens in Chelsea’s Andreas Christiansen.
The Denmark international may have made his senior debut for the Blues back in October 2014, yet this season has seen him really come of age with 11 Premier League appearances for Antonio Conte’s side, including five successive starts.
And the 21-year-old is performing so well that David Luiz is struggling to even make the matchday squad, and it’s form which has reportedly attracted the attention of Guardiola’s City, according to Nevin.
He said: ‘I heard a wee whisper, and I don’t know if it’s true, but the player he would really like more than anyone else is Andreas Christensen from Chelsea.’
And these comments are sure to intrigue our resident Citizens fans, many of whom will have seen the strides Christiansen has made this term, and perhaps feel that he could provide the long-term partner to John Stones in the heart of Guardiola’s backline.
Landlord’s verdict: It’s all been going brilliantly for Manchester City so far this season, although the last week has reminded everyone that winning the Premier League title is far from easy.
And with possible issues at centre-back to come, what with John Stones out for a few weeks and Eliaquim Mangala doing little against West Ham to prove his credentials, manager Pep Guardiola could face something of a problem in that department.
Yet, according to former Chelsea star Pat Nevin, the former Barcelona boss is interested in Chelsea’s Andreas Christiansen, who has been a huge success story at Stamford Bridge so far this term with a string of impressive displays.
But, as Nevin acknowledges, it’s a deal that is unlikely to happen, but were City to march on and underline their dominance of English football in the coming years, the defender could well be swayed by Guardiola’s side.
