The potential new-look Arsenal midfield including this Dutch star

Our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern are getting more and more excited with this season as they now sit in second place ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.

Indeed, they are now the best placed side to challenge Chelsea for the title but with so many games left this year our landlord thinks we’re still set for quite a fair few twists to come.

Looming large on the horizon, meanwhile, is the January transfer window with all Premier League clubs, regardless of aspirations this year, expected to do business in a bid to get the edge of their rivals.

Arsenal are going to be no different, you’d imagine, and certainly The Mirror is of that impression.

They are reporting that Riechedly Bazoer could be on his way to the Emirates after his Ajax manager admitted that he looks seem set to leave in January.

That got our landlord thinking, then, how would the Dutchman fit into Arsenal’s midfield? He thinks it’d look something like this…

CDM: Francis Coquelin

The Frenchman seems to have seen off the challenge of Granit Xhaka for now as the Gunners’ midfield enforcer.

Whilst the summer signing is still apparently settling in the Frenchman needs to make hay and prove that he should still be in the team even when Xhaka is confident. Our landlord agrees and thinks that the midfielder has done enough up to now to be a regular starter for the club.

The Dutchman is a very versatile player and can play in three central roles in midfield.

Whilst he’s capable of being an attacking midfielder and a typical central player our landlord is playing him in the deeper role so he fits into Arsenal’s system better. The current Ajax man can definitely play there and would be expected to drive the Gunners forward as Santi Cazorla begins to suffer with injuries more and more.

RAM: Theo Walcott

Walcott flies forward and has been at his very best this season.

He looks much happier to be an Arsenal player this year and has certainly proven those critics wrong from last season who were incessantly laying into him. He’s scored goals and set them up and whilst Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez get most of the plaudits he too deserves credit for the Gunners’ current standing in the league.

Bazoer may want to play in a more advanced role but you cannot take this man out of the side.

Whilst he sometimes goes missing in the big games he still has the ability to turn things on a dime into Arsenal’s favour and very few players have that kind of ability. Who Arsenal replace him with in the future remains to be seen but they’ll have to be a very talented footballer, that’s for sure.

LAM: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Our landlord has been mightily impressed with ‘The Ox’ recently as he has evidently knuckled down.

There were whispers here in the Transfer Tavern that he might fall by the way side this season but he has come back spectacularly and his goal against West Ham last weekend was sublime. Now he just needs that consistency for the rest of the year to keep himself in the team and earn more England caps.
