Off the field things are looking pretty good too, with the Reds confirming this week that Naby Keita will be moving to the club next summer having agreed to join the club ahead of time.
The timing of the deal has generated a bit of confusion amongst the fans in the Transfer Tavern, but our landlord thinks that it’s the perfect deal for all parties.
RB Leipzig were, clearly, very hesitant to sell their star midfielder this summer, and with good reason. He was so good for them last term, and to lose him would have come as a bitter blow for their Bundesliga and Champions League hopes this season. Agreeing this deal will allow them ample time to find a replacement, whilst also allowing them to compete in the season ahead.
For Liverpool, though, the deal makes a lot of sense too. Waiting a year will have almost certainly reduced his price tag, making the deal far more affordable for the club. This also allows the prospect of another big deal this summer before the window closes, given that the funds for the Keita deal will not be needed until next season.
It will also give Jurgen Klopp another season to work out his options in the middle of the park. Keita is likely to come in and be a starter next season, but who will partner him? The likes of Emre Can and Jordan Henderson will have to impress this season to stand any chance of staying in the side. This will keep them on their toes, ideally improving their performances once more.
If this is what it takes to get such an important deal done, it was absolutely worth it – and this deal works for everyone.
