Chelsea have had a fair few disappointing players in recent years…
For all of Chelsea’s riches, brought on by the arrival of Russian Roman Abramovich, the Blues haven’t had a shortage of disappointing players in recent years.
It may have improved as of late, but the early years of the Roman Empire were characterised by high-profile signings and catastrophic flops – in an ode to Chelsea’s poor approach to transfer business.
The Blues were very much operating with a ‘see what sticks’ mentality – and more often that not; things did not stick.
No area on the pitch has had more flops that the attacking-berth; with Chelsea’s quest for forward dominance a well documented tale in the Football Transfer Tavern. But who was the worst?
With that said, THIS is the worst Chelsea front three in the history of the football club…
LW – Mateja Kezman
Mateja Kezman is playing out of position here, which surely will just make things worse – but you can’t have a worst attackers list and not include the disappointing Serbian.
He makes the list based on one thing: the fact that he came with so much hype, and disappointed so much.
The Football Transfer Tavern was alive with excitement when he joined the club after notching up over 100 goals in the Dutch league with PSV – and he was expected to do similar numbers in England.
However, he was never able to adjust to the Premier League, and he ended up leaving after just 1 season after bagging just 4 goals in nearly 30 games.

ST – Chris Sutton
Chris Sutton was signed for Chelsea in 1999, for a whopping fee of £10 million. Whilst this might not seem much in today’s market – at the time it was a huge deal.
That sort of money was expected to guarantee success and goals – but in Chris Sutton, Chelsea got the very opposite.
He scored just 1 league goal in nearly 30 league appearances for the Blues – cementing his legacy as one of the worst strikers to don the famous Chelsea blue.
A few of the Chelsea fans in the Tavern had questioned why Torres wasn’t included on this list – and the simple fact is because Sutton was just so much worse. Whilst Torres contributed en route to numerous title wins, Sutton contributed nothing – and he left a year later with very little fanfare.
RW – Shaun Wright-Phillips
If you look up expensive flop in the dictionary, our landlord is pretty sure you’ll see Shaun Wright-Phillips’ name up in lights.
The English winger signed for Chelsea for £21 million, and was expected to make a career for himself at Chelsea – with the weight of the world on his shoulders.
However, in retrospect, the move ended up being an absolute flop – and Wright-Phillips never managed to do much at all in a Blue shirt.
He was sold not long after at a massive lost, never to be heard of at Stamford Bridge again.
