The Worst World Cup Miss Ever?

For anyone who missed the surprisingly entertaining Nigeria vs South Korea game yesterday, here’s one highlight of the game that you simply shouldn’t miss.

With Greece eventually succumbing to the Argentinean onslaught, Nigeria could have gone through at the expense of Korea had they beaten the Asian side. The Africans did eventually pull one back from 2-1 down to achieve a draw, but, shortly before Everton striker Yakubu converted a penalty to restore parity, the Nigerian missed this amazing opportunity.

His recent form for the Merseyside club has been marred recently by injury and many Toffee’s fans won’t be surprised to have seen the 27-year-old tap the ball the wrong side of the post with his heel despite being a couple of yards from goal with the net at his mercy.

That missed chance probably smacked of déjà vu for Chelsea fans also who saw their African striker, Salomon Kalou, fire an inch-perfect strike from a similar distance against the cross-bar in last season’s FA Cup final against Portsmouth.

Unfortunately for them both, neither can be saved from a painfully embarrassing, comparison to Diana Ross’ expertly taken penalty kick in the 1994 World Cup’s opening ceremony. In fairness to Mrs Ross, though, she was much further out than Yakubu and Kalou.

I began writing about football at a very young age by scrawling my teams name on a wall in a public toilet. Little did I know then that this would make me more than qualified to write for the Transfer Tavern. If I'm not stupefying events to the point of parody, I'll be, on occasion, as sober and serious as Wenger on jury duty.
