Our landlord here at the Transfer Tavern is fully aware of how good Everton are at producing some of the best young starlets that this country has ever seen, with the likes of Wayne Rooney, John Stones and most recently Tom Davies.
We can take a long trip down memory lane and look at some of the young players, maybe not even produced by the clubs academy but that have come into the team and been given a chance in the first team set up, just look at Ademola Lookman this season, who they brought in from League One Charlton Athletic in January and he’s already strongly involved with the team and even making quite the strong and important impact.
Through the years there has been some strong leaders of the Everton team and most recently its been with veteran midfielder Gareth Barry, who is a natural leader having captained Aston Villa from a young age. It is going be tough boots to fill for whoever it is that takes over from him in the long term.
Although the two players who are mentioned may not be the predecessor to Barry straight away, they for sure have the potential to one day lead out the blue half of Merseyside!
So with that, for sure these TWO Everton starlets definitely have the potential to be a future captain at the club…
MASON HOLGATE
The former Barnsley man seems to of replaced John Stones as a quality young English defender to come through the ranks at Barnsley only to then sign for Everton and come good instantly! Holgate may not be playing as much lately as he was at the start of the campaign, but there is for sure no doubting the talent that the kid has!
Holgate, unlike Stones, has a more traditional ethos on how to defend and does the fundamentals just right! The Evertonians here at the bar will also be hoping that he doesn’t do exactly want John Stones did and leave to Manchester City and instead they can keep him and make him into the type of player they want him to be.
TOM DAVIES
The versatile midfielder has shown moments of pure talent at times this season, and his name will be on the lips of many punters here at the Transfer Tavern for years to come. Davies is already playing above his years this season and many here will be hoping he only gets better and better as years go by.
If Everton can keep him, for sure five years from now he could be the perfect fit as an out and out Evertonian as the clubs captain. They’ll have a fight to keep him at the club but if they can he’ll have a big future with the club and could be a great leader of the team. Watch this space for sure!
