Everton fans here in the Transfer Tavern were disappointed that Ronald Koeman didn’t bring in as many names as he shipped out in the January transfer window.
It’s been a relatively good start to 2017 for the Toffees. Unbeaten in the Premier League, the only loss Everton suffered in January was a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City which saw the Merseyside club knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round.
Although the results are going their way, though, January saw Everton get rid of several senior first-team players, such as Gerard Deulofeu, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo.
Eveton’s biggest January signing, meanwhile, saw Morgan Schneiderlin make the short trip from Manchester to Merseyside for a fee that could rise to £24 million.
Other than this and Ademola Lookman, Everton didn’t really bring in as many players as the fans would have hoped to see. So let’s look at two mistakes Koeman made in the January window that could damage their season – according to our landlord…
Not signing a replacement for Yannick Bolasie
When the DR Congo winger picked up an injury for Everton last year, things quickly took a turn for the worst.
What originally looked like a few months out of action, quickly turned into a rumoured 12 months on the side-lines for Bolasie.
Following his injury, the Merseyside club expressed an interest in bringing over Dutch winger Memphis Depay from Manchester United. However, Memphis recently signed a four and half year deal at French club Lyon, so that transfer never came into play.
Not signing another striker
It’s no secret that Everton are solely relying on Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku to deliver the goods at the moment.
Although they signed West Ham forward Enner Valencia back in August of last year on loan, the Ecuadorian has struggled to make a break into the starting line-up, and he has only scored one goal for The Toffees so far.
There were a number of strikers that would have fit in straight away at Goodison Park. The likes of Salomon Rondon, Odion Ighalo and Andre Gray have all proved they have what it takes to play in the Premier League, but Koeman failed to even consider moving for them.
