It’s been a relatively sombre start to the New Year for Man City fans here in The Tavern…

Other than shipping the hot Brazilian prospect Gabriel Jesus across the Atlantic, Manchester City made no other signings in the January transfer window.

It’s also important to consider that the signing of Jesus was actually finalised in the summer of last year, so technically speaking the Sky Blues didn’t actually make a single signing in January.

City were definitely below average in the month of January. Although winning at home against Burnley at the start of the month, a 4-0 thumping against Everton and a 2-2 draw with Tottenham left City fans yet again criticising the defence of the team.

Taking this into account, let’s look at two mistakes that City made in the January transfer window which could end up seriously damaging their hopes for the title this season…

Not Signing Ben Davies

Following reports from The Sun in January, Man City had their eyes firmly set on second choice fullback Ben Davies for Tottenham Hotspur.

A £20 million offer was touted, but City never followed up in their interests and the Welshmen has remained at White Hart Lane.

Considering the defensive downfall Manchester City have had this season compared to their last, Davies would have been a versatile asset that not only could fill in as a left-back but also a centre-back, as he proved in Euro 2016.

Sign a Replacement for Vincent Kompany

Man City captain Vincent Kompany had a rough 2016.

Missing out on most of City’s 15/16 campaign, Euro 2016, and the start to this year’s season, frequent injuries have left the Belgian frustrated on the sidelines.

Even though injury concerns started for Kompany last season, City still haven’t brought in that top class centre-half to fill in the Belgian’s boots.

If City’s defence continues to stay in the state that it is for the rest of the season, you can be assured their title hopes are in great jeopardy!
