The Manchester United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern will certainly be satisfied with the way things are going for their club right now, as they are still competing in four different competitions this season.

Despite a less than steady start to the campaign, a 17-match unbeaten run helped the Red Devils come back into contention for a top four spot in the Premier League, while they also reached the League Cup final despite losing 2-1 to Hull City in the second leg last week – the fans standing at the bar quickly turned their attentions to whether the club would be bringing in any new players after the FA Cup success against Wigan on Sunday.

Like many of their other top flight rivals at the top, United manager Jose Mourinho has endured a quiet January transfer window in terms of incomings, with fringe players Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay leaving for Everton and Lyon respectively.

However, with plenty still to play for over the rest of the season and some areas of the team looking to have less depth than others, should the Portuguese boss have made some additions this month? Well, the landlord certainly thinks he should have.

Not pushing hard enough for Griezmann

It seems as though United boss Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the Atletico Madrid and France forward having been linked with an £85m move for the attacker this month, but it seems as though any deal will happen in the summer at the earliest – much to the disappointment of the Red Devils fans standing at the bar.

However, with United fighting on four fronts and possibly sometimes needing that magic spark in the final third, Mourinho could be nuts for not pushing hard enough for the signature of the 25-year-old this month.

While Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been the key man when it comes to goals for United this term, Griezmann certainly has the pedigree to support him well having scored 14 goals in 28 appearances in all competitions for Atletico this term, also picking up seven assists, and it is a threat that would have helped the club add to their disappointing total of 33 Premier League goals in 22 matches this season – the landlord knows they must be more clinical in the coming months.

Not signing a new centre-back

Jose Mourinho stengthened his centre-back options with the addition of Eric Bailly last summer, but when both he and Chris Smalling were sidelined with injuries at the same time towards the start of the season, the Portuguese manager had to turn to Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones to replace the duo – the United fans standing at the bar certainly would have been nervous before the pair came into the starting XI.

Despite them largely impressing at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence, Mourinho probably would have liked more quality in that position than he currently has, and a top-class centre-half would certainly have boosted the side who are still in four different competitions this term.

United have been linked with Roma’s Kostas Manolas, but their failure to tie up a deal for the Greece international this month may have reportedly allowed their Premier League rivals to pounce – the landlord will be hoping that the failure to bring in a new centre-back doesn’t cost them.
