It seems to be the same old worries being discussed by the Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern, year in, year out.
For the past five seasons, the Black Cats have been fighting for their lives and even though cats usually have nine lives, our landlord believes that this run of relegation threatened seasons is ridiculous.
The Mackems currently sit bottom of the table and are three points from safety which leads to many fingers being pointed at manager, David Moyes, who had led this Sunderland side to this weak league position.
On top of a poor league position, the Scot has been less than impressive in trying to strengthen his squad in this January’s transfer window with many of the Sunderland fans at the bar calling for Moyes to get the chop.
Without Jermain Defoe, it is obvious to see that Moyes wouldn’t still have a job. The 33-year-old striker has bagged 60% of the basement side’s goals this season, a staggering statistic which shows in Defoe, there will always be hope at the Stadium of Light.
And although, Moyes has kept hold of Defoe – he has made some blunders in this transfer window, here are two of them…
Selling Patrick van Aanholt
Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern were left fuming at the sale of Patrick van Aanholt in order to strengthen relegation rivals, Crystal Palace. Palace currently sit just above the Mackems in the relegation zone so it is obvious to see why this move has gone down like a lead balloon among the fans.
Alongside this, the Black Cats will surely miss van Aanholt’s ability to get forward and will remember how crucial the Dutchman was in the great escape mastered by Sam Allardyce last season.
The creation of an Everton renuion
With the signing of Joleon Lescott announced last week and the arrivals of Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson this week, Sunderland fans could be forgiven for thinking that they’re becoming a dump for ex-Everton players.
All three signings are less than convincing and surely do not possess the x-factor needed to save Sunderland’s season. Moyes’ obsession with his connections at the blue half of Merseyside may cost him his job as well as Sunderland’s Premier League status.
