Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are considering who should follow in the footsteps of their former great captains.

Steve Bruce, Roy Keane and Nemanja Vidic certainly are all big names to follow when it comes to receiving the captain’s armband on a permanent basis, so it’s definitely a big deal at the Theatre of Dreams.

Indeed, our punters think that surely the likelihood of a Michael Carrick retirement is coming in the summer, with the role of the United leader being, once again, up for grabs, there are plenty of suggestions floating about the Old Trafford terraces.

Our landlord believes for these two youth academy players, it’s far to early in both their United careers to be considered for next season. However, not since Gary Neville, have The Red Devils had a captain from their famous academy, and before that, you’d have to go way back to Sir Bobby Charlton’s stint from 1967-’73.

With that in mind, our regulars outline, TWO of the players they think could be future captains of the club…

Paul Pogba

The United graduate came through the ranks before moving to Juventus for a nominal fee, where he became one of the best midfielders in the world.

Indeed, the return of Pogba and a record fee sent United fans into hysteria during the summer of 2016, and nothing would be more fitting than placing the armband around the arm of a player, who classes United as home.

He’s shown this season he leadership qualities in his fight to bring more trophies to Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay

McTominay has only just broken through the United ranks into the first team this season, but many are already predicting this lad to be a future leader. A cool-headed holding midfielder, he looks like a natural heir to the likes of Darren Fletcher and the aforementioned Carrick at long last.

He has a steady temperament and ability to match. Also, after being at United since he aged five he, more than anyone knows the fabric of the club and what it takes to push forward.
