Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are on a scouting mission for the next Southampton player to make the familiar journey up the M6 to Anfield this summer.
It’s the most trodden route in transfer Premier League history, that one from Southampton to Liverpool. Eight players in the Premier League era have made the move north, some have flourished, while some haven’t. Indeed, Liverpool could once again go back to their favoured club this summer our punters believe, should Southampton go down in search of some bargain basement deals.
While the Saints host the Reds today, our barman thinks surely Jurgen Klopp will be casting an eye over a potential couple of players that are impressing even though Southampton face the fight against relegation. Liverpool themselves need a win to sustain their top four hopes and many of the former players will be going back to prove a point.
Our landlord takes a look at two Southampton players that need to up their game to impress Klopp today…
Fraser Forster

The England goalkeeper will surely be looking at leaving if the Saints go down, and with Klopp’s need for a No.1 permanent goalkeeper, this could be a matchup that suits both parties.
Klopp has bounced between Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius for the majority of this season, without ever really putting faith in one to go one and make the spot his own. This has probably paid towards Liverpool’s defensive confusion and silly mistakes this season, so there’s certainly space between the sticks.
James Ward-Prowse

The talented young midfielder would suit Klopp’s Liverpool team with his skill and dynamism. Ward-Prowse has largely impressed in a season that has been a complete failure so far for the Saints, emerging as a palpable goal threat in a one-paced side of late. In the few times Southampton have looked like a good footballing side, Ward-Prowse has been at the centre of why.
Our regulars believe that if Klopp can get Ward-Prowse to Anfield, he could be the player to revolutionize Liverpool next season.
