Roman Abramovich’s tenure at Chelsea has brought with it some of the best players in world football.
The Russian’s millions have turned the Blues from a good side into a great side, and now, over a decade later, the Blues stand near the top of the European pyramid.
However, for every Didier Drogba that Chelsea have signed, there have been more than a few flops – many of which have formed the basis of a number jokes here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
For all of Chelsea’s riches; their scouting network definitely needs some work…

Juan Cuadrado
Chelsea’s purchase of Juan Cuadrado made very little sense to our landlord at the time; and several years down the line – not much has changed.
Cuadrado’s time under contract with the Blues has been an unmitigated flop; floundering around the first team for a few months before being shipped out on consecutive loans.
He has done absolutely nothing in a Chelsea shirt, and now he has played his last game for the Blues.
A three-year loan at Juventus beckons for Cuadrado, seeing him through to the end of his Chelsea contract with Juventus.
What a disappointment.
Fernando Torres
Where to begin?
The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern were delighted when their club signed Fernando Torres from Liverpool in early 2011, with the Spaniard touted by many as the final piece of the Chelsea jigsaw.
It was this expectation, combined with his price tag – that our landlord feels sealed the fate of Fernando Torres.
The Spaniard never lived up to the hype at Chelsea, and became renowned here in the Tavern for his shocking performances in a Blue shirt.
His tenure was successful from a trophy perspective, of course, but on the pitch he had very little to do with that success.
He scored just 20 goals in 110 league appearances for the Blues – simply not good enough.
Maybe the worst purchase in Premier League history.
Falcao
This move, on the surface, offered very little risk to Chelsea. A loan move meant that if things didn’t work out, Chelsea could just send him back to Monaco and chalk it down as a bad move.
However, when you consider the wages that Chelsea were forced to fork out for the Columbian midfielder – the decision to bring Falcao begins to make less sense.
He had an absolutely torrid time with the Blues, making just 10 league appearances and scoring one goal.
He suffered an injury in November that would go on to end his spell with the Blues – though Chelsea still had to pay his wages until the end of his tenure.
Falcao’s spell at Chelsea was a flop – and a massive one at that.
