In recent years, Liverpool’s business in the transfer market has been at the centre of many jokes here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
A number of players have been sold for huge fees, but their replacements have often not been worth the paper that their contract has been signed on.
Players like Mario Balotelli and Andy Carroll are easy scapegoats to turn to, in that both players failed to live up to their outlandish price tags – but there have been far worse players in recent years to grace the Liverpool shirt regardless of price tag.
At least Andy Carroll was able to get a game at Liverpool…Occasionally.
With that said, these THREE are the most abysmal Liverpool signings from the past 5 years – Agreed?
Stewart Downing
Liverpool’s deal for Stewart Downing surprised many of the Liverpool fans here in the Tavern when it happened – and they were definitely vindicated in their doubts by the time his Liverpool career came to an end.
His form dipped constantly throughout his spell at Liverpool, often regularly failing to cement his place in the Liverpool first team despite his big money move.
65 appearances in a Liverpool shirt were rewarded with just three league goals; particularly bad considering the attacking role that was often given to Downing.
A return to his first club, Middlesbrough, has returned Downing to the form that he had during his pomp – but his spell at Liverpool would likely be happily forgotten by the Liverpool faithful and Downing himself.
Paul Konchesky
Paul Konchesky did not represent as much of a financial outlay as Stewart Downing; but his form on pitch proved that and then some.
The arrival of Kenny Dalglish spelled the end for the English defender, with Liverpool’s two-time manager typically not favouring him in defence. He was subsequently shifted out on loan to Nottingham Forest.
Konchesky was with Liverpool for just one year, and his time at the club was marred by key mistakes and inconsistency.

Iago Aspas
Iago Aspas is a curious case – and the Liverpool faithful here in the Tavern just can’t get their head around it.
During a two-year spell with Liverpool, Aspas made just 14 league appearances – despite his near £10 million move to Merseyside.
His spell was marred by inconsistency and an inability to break into the Liverpool first team, with players like Coutinho, Suarez and Sturridge often preferred to the Spanish-born forward.
He would return to Spain as quickly as he left, with very little progress made in his career.
He makes the list for the expectation that accompanied his signing, his price tag and his inability to make an impact at the club.
