Marko Marin
The deal to sign Marko Marin was touted by many in the Football Transfer Tavern as a masterstroke; but the transfer turned out to be one of the worst in history.
Injury-ridden from the outset, Chelsea had set themselves the challenge of curing the German of his injury problems – but were ultimately unsuccessful in this venture.
In all he made just 6 league appearances for the club – a shocking return on what was a multi-million-pound investment.
After several failed loans, Marko Marin fell into obscurity – and now finds himself playing in Greece.
Yuri Zhirkov
This deal was nothing short of a disaster.
Signed for just shy of £20 million, Zhirkov was quite clearly a ploy from Russian owner Roman Abramovich to get more Russian players into the Premier League – and his signing did very little to achieve that.
Unable to hold down a first team spot and looking fairly poor when he did – Zhirkov somehow managed to survive in SW6 for two years.
A prime example of how deals made on the basis of anything other than pure talent are destined for failure.
Juan Cuadrado
The latest in a long lone of failed deals for midfielders.
Juan Cuadrado was signed for just shy of £30m by Chelsea, and judging by his exploits in Serie A – he was destined to be a hit.
However, for whatever reason, it just didn’t work out for the Columbian – and after less than 6 months with the Blues he was shipped out on loan back to Italy.
That would mark the end of his Chelsea career, and Cuadrado now finds himself on an extended 3-year loan deal with Juve.
13 Premier League appearances later – this deal will be a tough one to forget for the Chelsea faithful in the Football Transfer Tavern.
